Although it is not acttually located on the island no visit would be complete without having a visit to Eilean Donan Castle. One of Scotland’s most photographed monuments the castle has also been used in numerous films including the 1985 cult classic “Highlander”. The castle is privately owned but, for an entrance fee, you can walk around the well equipped castle or take a guided tour. The castle is only fifteen minutes from the Skye Bridge.
The only true mountain range in the United Kingdom is The Cuillin which provide challenging opportunities for mountaineering. In total the rough and ready Black Cuillins has 12 munros with Sgurr Alasdair being the tallest at 992 m (3,255 ft).
The Isle of Skye only has two Corbetts (Glamaig is the highest) and both are located in the Red Hills. The Black Cuillin are bare rock at their summits whereas the Red Hills (often wrongly called the Red Cuillin) are much softer featuring vegetation to the very top .
If you want to indulge in climbing please seek some advice as it can often be immensely dangerous, especially if you are ill equipped. Too many people find themselves in difficulties after a quick change in the weather, always prepare for the worst. You can access the Black Cuillin from Glen Brittle and the Red Hills from Glen Sligachan.
