Crude Oil The problem with oil is that it contains hundreds various types of hydrocarbon mixtures. You must separate the different types of hydrocarbons that something useful. Fortunately, there is an easy way to separate things, and this is oil refineries. The process of oil refining begins with a fractional distillation column. Different hydrocarbon chain lengths have a boiling point, so they can all be separated by distillation.
